The Spanish 1: Beginners course assumes no prior knowledge of the Spanish language.

During each lesson you’ll improve your skills as you listen to, read, speak and write Spanish. You’ll also meet to aspects of Spanish and Latin American culture, as well as covering essential explanations of grammar.

Numbers on this course are strictly limited to ten students to ensure plenty of individual attention.

The course follows the textbook ‘Aula Internacional Plus 1’ – a highly regarded book used by many language schools across Spain for foreign learners of Spanish - which is included in the course cost, and which you will receive your copy of in the first lesson.

Course Breakdown:

Lesson 1 - Saying hello and introducing ourselves. Numbers 1 to 10. The Spanish alphabet. Names of some common objects.

Lesson 2 - Asking for help in class. Recognising familiar words in Spanish. Spanish names and the verb llamarse (to be called). Giving our nationality, job and age. Number 11-99.

Lesson 3 - Asking for and giving basic personal information. The verbs tener (to have) and ser (to be). Personal pronouns and different words for “you”.

Lesson 4 - Understanding information heard in a conversation. Aspects of hispanic culture. Expressing a desire.

Lesson 5 - Discussing contact with other languages. Grammatical gender of words and words for “the”, “a” and “an”. Regular verbs in the present tense.

Lesson 6 - Discussing language-learning activities. The verbs querer (to want) and hacer (to do / to make).

Lesson 7 - Understand a tourist talking about what they want to do. Vocabulary for describing locations. Introduction to differences between verbs ser, estar and the verb form hay.

Lesson 8 - Forms of the verb estar, and translating “to be”. How adjectives agree with nouns. Using muy and mucho. Question words. Emphasis in pronunciation.

Lesson 9 - Expressing superlatives using el/la más …. Describing weather. Vocabulary for some types of shops and products.

Lesson 10 - Describing clothing and vocabulary for items taken travelling. Pronouncing erre.

Lesson 11 - The verbs ir (to go) and preferir (to prefer). Using el / la / los / las with an adjective. Words for “this”, “that”, “these” and “those”. Colours. Numbers over 100.

Lesson 12 - Shopping conversations and asking prices.

Lesson 13 - Talking about personal characteristics. Describing personal tastes using gustar and encantar.

Lesson 14 - Expressing agreement and disagreement. Words for family members. Possessive pronouns. Describing someone’s appearance.

Lesson 15 - Describing personality. Days of the week and times of the day.

Lesson 16 - Describing when and how often something happens. Describing personality. Asking for and giving the time.

Lesson 17 - Describing daily routine. Reflexive verbs and stem-changing verbs.

Lesson 18 - Practice talking about times and daily routines. Vocabulary for food items.

Lesson 19 - More vocabulary for food items. Ordering food and drink. The verbs poner (to put) and traer (to bring).

Lesson 20 - Describing how hot drinks are taken. Describing how food is prepared. Even more vocabulary for food items.

Lesson 21 - Describing a town or city and the facilities found there.

Lesson 22 - Describing location. Asking for and giving directions.

Lesson 23 - Describing a tourist destination. Describing someone’s personality.

Lesson 24 - Describing past events using the pretérito perfecto (present perfect) tense. Using the verbs saber and conocer (to know), and poder (to be able to).

Lesson 25 - Review and refresh language covered during the course.
